• THE CITY AND THE COUNTY <br /> Location. The City is located in Independence County (the "County"), which is in the north <br /> central part of Arkansas. The City is situated approximately 95 miles northeast of Little Rock, <br /> Arkansas. <br /> Population. The City has a municipal airport(Batesville Regional Airport)with a 6,002 foot <br /> lighted runway. Several motor freight earners make shipments from the City to major cities <br /> across the United States. The City is served by The Missouri and North Arkansas Railroad <br /> headquartered in Carthage, Missouri. It is a Class III railroad with Class I connections to UP, <br /> BNSF and KCS Railroads. <br /> Government. The government of the City operates under the mayor-city council form of <br /> government, pursuant to which a mayor is elected for a 4-year term (current term expires <br /> December 31, 2014) and eight aldermen are elected for two-year terms (current terms expire <br /> December 31, 2012). Primary and secondary education for the City's inhabitants are provided by a public <br /> school system. The University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville and Lyon College, <br /> with approximate enrollment of 1,600 and 650, respectively, are both located in the City. <br /> Financial Institutions. The City is served by the following banks having their principal offices <br /> in the City: The Citizens Bank and First Community Bank of Batesville.
