HomeMy WebLinkAbout1975-679-R RESOLUTION NO. , 71 TN SUPPORT OF THE BUILDING OF A COAL-FIRED STEAM GENERATING PLANT AT THE LOCATION DESIGNATED BY ARKANSAS POWER & LIGHT COMPANY AS "THE NEWPORT 4W SITE". WHEREAS, the Arkansas Power & Light Company had planned a four unit coal- fired generating plant and was issued a permit for only two units; and WHEREAS, Arkansas Power & Light Company declares another two unit plant is needed to meet the needs of the company's customers and since there is also an urgent national need for more energy; and WHEREAS, the "Newport Site" would be a Central location for a power plant with easy access to a rail line, water transportation and two national highways and several state roads; and WHEREAS, the enviromental objections to coal-burning generators have been overcome; and WHEREAS, the economic impact on our communities would be of inestimable value and would employ large numbers of people both during the construction 4W period and after completion; and WHEREAS, the Jackson County and Independence County Communities will assist with efforts to obtain this generating plant for the "Newport Site". NOW: Therefore, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Batesville, Arkansas that the Council go on record as supporting the location of a two unit coal-fired steam generating plant by Arkansas Power & Light Company in the locality designated as the "Newport Site".
