HomeMy WebLinkAbout2011-09-01-R J • RESOLUTION NO. k* ck—v \'�L, A RESOUTION DECLARING THE COMMITMENT OF BATESVILLE, ARKANSAS TO THE INITIATIVE FOR HEALTHY EATING AND ACTIVE LIVING; AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES. WHEREAS, obesity places a huge financial burden on our health care system, costing the United States$147 billion per year due to related chronic diseases; and WHEREAS, the United States is raising a generation of children who may live sicker, shorter lives than their parents with current statistics projecting that one-third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives, while others will face chronic obesity-related health problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer and asthma; and WHEREAS, a study of nearly 700 nationwide neighborhoods found that lower income areas have access to half as many supermarkets as the wealthier areas; and WHEREAS, over the past two decades, obesity rates in Arkansas have doubled (currently resulting in one in three Arkansans being obese), more likely to be unhealthy, unhappy, and having a greater number of absences from school than their healthy peers; and WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Council have authorized the Eat Well-Play Hard make it balance Coordinator position to support the following vision and mission: Vision: Batesville is a community, committed to healthy eating and active living. Mission: The Batesville Eat Well-Play Hard initiative will: • Create an environment that empowers our community to recognize and adopt healthy choices; • Collect evidence-based data; • Build partnerships to identify and share resources; • Develop and reinforce policy initiatives that support these goals; • Promote and implement innovative programs and practices; and WHEREAS, the City has joined a Leadership Team with representatives from state and local health departments, coordinated School Health , Chamber of Commerce, City government and the Batesville community to set forth policy recommendations to support Eat Well-Play Hard's vision and mission ; and WHEREAS,The City of Batesville has received a $668,206.00 "Communities Putting Prevention to Work" grant to pursue prevention policy goals by September 2012. • 1 1) Revise and implement the Independence County School District's wellness policy to insure that quality physical activity opportunities are offered district-wide for students and staff during after-school hours. 2) Implement a school wellness policy to include nutrition standards for all food service venues. Ensure healthy options are accessible to students and staff. 3) Implement Worksite Wellness Policy in the school district to increase physical activity and improve nutrition among school employees. 4) Establish joint Use Agreements between schools and community organizations to provide accessible places for physical activity in Batesville. NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BATESVILLE, ARKANSAS: SECTION 1: That the City Council hereby declares its commitment to Eat Well-Play Hard Leadership initiative and to collaborating with the Eat Well-Play Hard Leadership Team on its policy recommendations. SECTION 2: That the City Council hereby declares its commitment to the goals set forth (W by the "Communities Putting Prevention to Work"grant.
